Digging For Gold.
Sometimes our Garden is not located on lovely soft, well drained soil, Do you feel like you need a mini digger or is this ground like a marsh land. If so then we can look at having raised beds instead of digging a bed into the ground. Remember if you find it difficult to dig then the kids will find it much harder
There are many ways of raising a bed. You can purchase raised beds in all good garden centres. We at Griffins have a great range of raised beds to suit all your needs.
You could use recycled products.
One great product is Builders planks and boards. There are usually the right height for a raised bed.
Just be sure it is clean and that there isn’t harsh chemiclas on the boards. Make a rectangular bed out these.
Ensure that the bed is assembled well as there will be a lot of weight in the bed.
Put a layer of stone on the base of bed to improve drainage and fill with good quality topsoil or compost.
Potting Grit can be mixed through out the compost to ensure it is not too heavy during the wet seasons..
This bed is now perfect for any planting. Fell free to paint the outside of the planks also if you want a lot of bright colours in your school garden.
There are many other ways to create a bed.......
You can use many other products like tyres, pallets, containers, pots, hanging baskets and window boxes.
When you are deciding on the size and location of your bed it is often hard to imagine it. Mark out the bed with a water hose or builders paint and take an image of it.
